Objectives:

  1. Bone formation markers
  2. Bone resorption markers
  3. Potential usage
  4. Which marker? Which cut off to use? LSC: Least Significant Change
  5. Timing of sampling
  6. Problems in usage of bone markers
  7. Recommendations

-Bone markers are indices of bone metabolism

Bone turnover markers:

  • BONE FORMATION MARKERS
    • OC: Osteocalcin;
    • BALP: Bone-specific alkaline phosphatase;
    • P1NP: N-terminal propeptide of type 1 procollagen;
    • P1CP: C-terminal propeptide of type 1 procollagen;

Bone turnover markers:

  • BONE RESORPTION MARKERS
    • NTX: cross-linked N-telopeptide of type 1 collagen;
    • CTX: cross-linked C- telopeptide of type 1 collagen;
    • D-PYR: Free deoxypyridinoline;
    • PYD: Free pyridinoline;
    • HYP: Hydroxyproline;
    • TRACP5b: isoform 5b of tartrate resistant acid phosphatase.
